How to check the quality of brake lining

Brake lining is a component of vehicle braking systems that helps slow or stop a vehicle by creating friction against the brake drum or rotor. Brake lining is typically made of materials such as organic, semi-metallic, or ceramic compounds, and it's designed to withstand high heat and pressure generated from braking. It is a consumable item, meaning it needs to be replaced periodically as it wears down. Proper maintenance of brake lining is critical for vehicle safety, as worn brake lining can cause decreased brake performance and increased stopping distances.

The quality of brake lining can be checked in a few ways:

Visual Inspection: Check the brake lining for signs of wear like cracks, glazing, or any uneven wear. If you can see the metal backing plate, then it's time to replace the brake pads.

Brake Pad Thickness: Measure the thickness of the brake lining with a ruler or caliper. Compare the thickness of the lining to manufacturer specifications to determine if it's within the acceptable range.

Sound: Listen for any unusual sounds when you apply the brakes. Squealing, grinding, or other abnormal noises may indicate worn brake pads.

Brake Pedal Feel: Check the brake pedal feel. If the pedal is spongy or if it requires more force to apply the brakes, then it could be an indication of worn brake pads.
